This week, the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB)’s Realtor Community Foundation (RCF) awarded community grants to L’Arche Association of Calgary, HomeSpace Society, The Mustard Seed and Discovery House Family Violence Prevention Society.

These grants will help with major repairs and renovations to existing housing or shelter supply, to keep people housed in their communities. This year, the RCF increased the amount of annual funding with a total of $115,500 allocated to the community grant, $10,000 more than in 2023.

“We are deeply inspired by the significant impact these non-profit organizations have on their communities, and we are proud to support them on behalf of our local realtors,” says Catherine Chow, chair of CREB Realtor Community Foundation.

“Unity in our local communities is crucial to improving housing and shelter solutions for those who need it most. Together, we can build a brighter future for Calgary and surrounding areas.”

The recipients

L’Arche Association of Calgary is a charity that supports people with intellectual disabilities to participate in a community designed to bring out their best. The organization has five homes in Calgary with supported independent living and day programming, and grant funds will enable essential renovations at one of the homes to ensure it meets standards and provides a secure and healthy living space for residents.

HomeSpace Society builds and manages specialized, affordable housing for vulnerable people in Calgary. One of its buildings that offers permanent supportive housing and a palliative care suite needs several updates and maintenance to ensure good quality housing for residents, which the grant funds will be dedicated to.

The Mustard Seed is a non-profit organization that cares for individuals experiencing poverty and homelessness by providing a space where people can have their physical, mental and spiritual needs met. Funds will be used to upgrade the flooring in several units.

Discovery House Family Violence Prevention Society serves women and children leaving domestic violence by helping them rebuild their lives. The shelter has two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments, a childcare centre, counselling rooms, community spaces and an enclosed courtyard with a play area and garden. Funds will target updating one of the suites with new flooring, lighting, appliances and furnishings.

Applications for the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB) Realtor Community Foundation’s Community and Transformation grants, which support local housing and shelter initiatives, are open until June 28.

$150,000 in Community and Transformation grants to support community housing

Community grants fund major repairs or renovations to existing community housing or shelter supply. This year, $105,000 in total Community grants will be awarded.

Transformation grants fund minor renovations to existing infrastructure that will improve housing quality. This year, $45,000 in total Transformation grants will be awarded.

“Everyone deserves the safety and security of a home,” says Catherine Chow, chair of CREB Realtor Community Foundation. “Through our Community and Transformation grants, realtors are committed to supporting Calgarians by keeping them housed and improving housing quality through renovation and repair.

All eligible organizations are strongly encouraged to apply for these grants for extra support on their projects. We look forward to learning more about all the amazing, hard work being done in the community.”

$350,000 in Legacy grant funding to RMHC this year

The Foundation will also award $350,000 in Legacy grant funding to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) this year, making it the third installment of a three-year $1 million funding agreement to support an expansion project that will more than double the number of families RMHC can support.

“The positive impact we’re making year after year is just amazing,” says Jason Yule, CREB’s director of communications and governance.

“CREB realtors are deeply invested in making a difference in the area of housing and shelter, which is why this year we’re offering $500,000 in grant funding to support local non-profit organizations to create new housing options and sustain the quality of existing housing for those who need it most.”

The Calgary Real Estate Board’s CREB Realtor Community Foundation, the charitable and philanthropic arm of CREB, has awarded $65,000 in grant funding to support six local non-profit organizations.

“We’re all so proud to make this kind of contribution to such a wide range of housing and shelter-based organizations,” says Sharon Bercuson, chair of the foundation. “The need is real and there couldn’t be a better time to lift up our community.”

The foundation has three grant programs, including its signature Legacy Grant, which creates new housing options for people who need it most. Funds from this year’s Legacy Grant went to Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta as part of a $1-million capital investment and three-year partnership that helped create 32 new housing units for low-income working families.

The foundation is also awarding funds through its Community and Transformation Grant programs, which focus on keeping people housed and improving housing quality. The following organizations were selected as 2020 grant recipients:

  • Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter
  • Discovery House Family Violence Prevention Society
  • Emma Maternity House Society
  • Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta
  • Inn from the Cold
  • Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta
